Breastfeeding as Meditation
First, I want to preface with the concept that FED is BEST! Nursing is hard, pumping is hard, buying and mixing formula is hard. Motherhood is difficult enough without feeling additional judgement. This is a resource to those on a breastfeeding journey.
There is a wonderful sense of calm that occurs as I nurse my children. This peace was not there from the start. I am not sure what comes first in the cycle, the release of feel-good connection hormones or the act of breastfeeding that causes this reaction. I do know the importance of breastfeeding as meditation for long-term success (if breastfeeding is your goal). Take deep releasing breaths. Focus on the innate knowledge that your baby possesses to create a chemical response which provides nutrition and connection.
Focus on their sweet little ears, the intent look in their eyes and the cadence of their mouth. If my baby does not receive a timely let down she will roll back and smile as she makes eye contact, and without fail as she continues to nurse she is rewarded with a full let down. In turn, I am rewarded with the connecting love hormones that bathe me in contentment.
It was not always this way. When I first tried to meditate and was easily distracted, it felt hard. It is the same with breastfeeding. Nursing is a dance between you and your baby, flesh of your flesh.
Feel empowered by the journey and know your body, soul, mind, and baby will align in this process. Caress their sweet little cheek and tell them “your nourishment is here baby just keep working.” Breathe and revel in the whole act of motherhood.
If you are having trouble, go to a quiet, safe, and peaceful place. Feel your power, your peace, and your purpose. Focus on your baby’s breathing as you breathe. Watch as they innately know to knead the breast. Put your skin to their skin. Engage your parasympathetic nervous system.
